Changing Unwanted Behaviours
Have you ever wondered why it’s so hard to change your unwanted behaviours? These can range from smoking, over-eating, shopping too much, excess of alcohol and many more. They may also be manifested as fears such as fear of spiders that cause you to scream and run out of the room, or habits like nail-biting.
I’ve tried everything….
You may have tried using willpower, without success. Perhaps you’ve read self-help books that seemed to make a lot of sense in helping you understand why you have the problem. Unfortunately, nobody learned to ride a bike or drive a car simply by reading a book, but had to practice doing it, with the help of someone who has already mastered the skill.
You might have tried listening to CDs or downloads and found them helpful, but only in the short-term. This is because they are of course generic in their application, and whereas they may work on a more permanent basis for some, for many they have only a temporary effect. And why? It’s similar to cutting off weeds above the ground, and finding they’ve grown back again in a matter of weeks, rather than digging down into the ground and removing the roots.
If your problem is over-eating, you will almost certainly have tried going on diets, maybe even many. Typically, the first one you tried was the most successful, but after a few weeks, you found yourself slipping back into the old habits of having ‘just one square’ of chocolate, or telling yourself ‘just one biscuit won’t hurt’ or whatever. After a while, when the weight crept back on, you probably tried another, different, diet, then another, then another…. and so on. It’s what is known as yo-yo dieting. Did anybody tell you there’s a lot of research out there that proves that diets just don’t work? This is because your subconscious mind knows that you like to eat these things because they make you feel good, albeit very briefly. It also knows you don’t like dieting, so will encourage you to keep on eating to maintain that feel-good factor. Your first diet failure was logged into your subcon which will helpfully remind you on every subsequent attempt that you are wasting your time, so why bother?
You may have gone as far as going on a group course to help you overcome a fear or change a behaviour. It probably felt great at the time and you came away buoyed-up and brimming with positive energy, quite certain you’d never have your problem again, but within a short time, the glow faded and you were re-enacting that unwanted behaviour. Or perhaps you felt like you were the only one on the course who wasn’t ‘getting it’ and wondering why everybody else seemed to be doing so much better? Don’t be fooled, most of them fell into the first category!
Why has nothing worked for me?
Most people are astonished to learn that we were pre-programmed around 5 months before we were born by the energy created by our parent’s thoughts and our surroundings. Every emotion, negative and positive, every thought, every little bit of stress they had, was all absorbed and stored within us. These exterior environmental stimulae continued to affect us until the age of 6 and continued to a lesser degree to the age of 9, then to an even lesser degree to the end of our teenage years. In fact, it is believed that around 80% of our emotional problems are already in place by the time we are 6 years old! So the thoughts, feelings, attitudes and beliefs that have shaped our personality are the result of what we learned before birth and until the age of 6, 9 and our late teens.
Imagine your subconscious mind being like the hard-drive on your personal computer, with all of your memories being stored in folders, along with all those attitudes and beliefs, both positive and negative. The subcon doesn’t know how to delete, so it just keeps on storing, and playing back that information over and over. Until we change the data on that programme, it will just keep on running.
How can I be permanently free of my problem?
This is where hypnosis can help you, by interrupting the programme, accessing the outdated negative information and replacing it with new and positive values and beliefs. The subconscious mind can only be directly communicated with in the state of hypnosis, which is nothing more than an altered state of awareness or highly-focused state of attention. Since one of the subcon’s jobs is to protect you, it is usually ignorant of the fact that the old programmes it has been running are not only completely out of date but also unhealthy. Like any well-meaning friend, if it is offered alternative information that it is convinced will actually make you healthier and happier, it will readily accept it.
It’s unlikely these changes can be accomplished in a single session of hypnotherapy. Your unwanted behaviour didn’t happen overnight, but, rather like those weeds, gradually grew bigger and stronger. An experienced and well-qualified hypnotherapist can help you to change your patterns of behaviour in a relatively short time; measured in weeks not years.
Just as garden plants flourish once the weeds are dug up, so your whole sense of well-being will improve as you go through the therapy. You will feel more in control of your life; happier and much more confident. The uncomfortable feelings that were the root cause of your problem will be gone and you will be able to enjoy your life free from those unwanted behaviours.
