Speaking in front of other people is a task that all of us will have to do. This might be telling a joke at a social event, giving that best man’s speech at a wedding, providing some training to others, or just contributing to a meeting at work. All of this events and others can make some people anxious and uncomfortable. However some people will be relaxed and confident doing the exact same thing. If it is possible to hold the attention of others and be in the spotlight and be confident for some people, than it should be possible for anyone to feel this way.

These tips on any sort of public speaking will help you get over your nerves and feel more confident than before:-

1) Know your subject

If you are going to talk about some subject, make sure you know what you want to say. If you know that you have various facts and arguments from to draw from it will help your confidence

2) Rehearse, rehearse, and rehearse

They say practice makes perfect. Even the greatest comics rehearse their jokes until they have they timing just right. Practice your speech or planned contribution to a meeting. Speak out loud so that you get used to hearing your own voice communicate the words you want to say.

3) Take your time

Don’t speak fast in an attempt to make your speech over and done with as soon as possible. Speaking quickly will make you feel uncomfortable and your audience will find it difficult to absorb the information you are giving.

4) Happy smiling faces help

Look for the friendly faces in your audience. Looking at these faces will help you feel more relaxed and at ease.

5) Quench that dry throat

Have some water available so that if you dry up, you can have a drink to ease this. Anyone who speaks will experience a drying of the mouth and throat as talking forces air through the mouth.

6) Orange juice relaxes

Recent studies have suggested that drinking some orange juice before you start your speech helps to keep your body relaxed.

7) Don’ read every word

Reading a prepared speech may seem to be a helpful preventative for the fear of forgetting what you wanted to say. Many best men use a pre-written speech and there are other occasions where writing your speech and reading it is appropriate. However for training, meetings, workshops and other occasions, reading the full text could put your audience to sleep. Having bullet points and using your natural style to expand on these points will help you feel in control and make it more interesting for your audience

8) Equipment checking

If you are going to use presentation software or an overhead projector, make sure you are familiar with their operation. Rehearse in the room and with the equipment you will be using on the day.

9) Audience support

Remember that your audience will want you to succeed. If you look uncomfortable or ill-prepared, they will start to feel your discomfort. They want you to succeed too.

10) Relaxation techniques

Learn how to relax using a technique such as self hypnosis. Self hypnosis not only helps you feel relaxed but can help with mental rehearsal too and help you to imagine succeeding.

Using these 10 tips will help you to feel more confident and relaxed during your speech. Speaking with confidence is a skill and like any skill you can improve on your past performance by continuing to speak at any and every occasion possible.
