Hypnotherapy and Motor Neurone Disease
MND or Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive degenerative disease. MND is a group of unusual diseases that damage nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord where the upper and lower motor neurones are negatively affected. This then alters muscle strength and can result in muscle loss.
Motor neurones (or neurons) are nerve cells that the brain sends its instructions to muscles in the body. These commands might be to move limbs such as the legs to walk, arms and hands to hold things or any other muscle movement in the body.
MND can begin at any age but is more predominant above the age 0f 65 and men are more likely to have it than women.
What symptoms are associated with motor neurone disease (MND)?
Motor Neurone Disease can progress at differing speeds and have different ways of affecting a particular person. It’s onset may be very slow and unexplained fatigue may be an early sign. Other early indications might be dropping things or not quite gripping an object.
Some other symptoms of MND can be:
- - involuntary muscle movements
- - discomfort and pain
- - cramping in muscles and joint stiffness
- - speech problems
- - swallowing difficulty
- - a feeling of choking or constant coughing
- - breathing difficulties
- - the head may droop to one side
It is vital to get yourself checked by your medical practitioner and not to self-diagnose as these symptoms are not unique to MND.
The Treatments for used for MND
A method to prevent MND’s onset has yet to be discovered, treatment is aimed at slowing down its progress initially. Therapy is aimed at helping functionality and abilities such as walking and speaking that may be adversely affected.
For some MND patients have psychological symptoms arise such as depression. If this occurs treatment can be via talk therapies with or without medication such as anti-depressants. It is also vital that carers such as family and friends receive support too. Encouragement is given to join local support groups to make contact with others who are going through the same experiences.
Drugs are being tested and developed to help MND. Stem cells are also being investigated as an additional form of treatment.
Hypnotherapy, De-stressing and Motor Neurone Disease
People who have MND can be naturally keen to seek out other means to help them cope with their symptoms. One of the most popular areas for extra help is the field of complementary therapies. Self hypnosis is particular aids the release of tension and stress and brings a profound sense of relaxation. In turn this seems to boost a person’s coping ability. Frustrations can be reduced which in turn helps relationships particularly with carers.
It is vital to seek the approval of your medical practitioner before you received any other treatment. Self hypnosis should be viewed as an extra form of help and not as a replacement for any other treatments you receive for motor neurone disease.
The great news is that self hypnosis is both easy to learn and the benefits of relaxation can be enjoyed on the very first occasion you experience it.
